Season 2: We are Still Here!…And Other Miracles

1931We are back and excited to begin season 2 of Faith Circus!

In this short episode, we share some details of what has happened over the summer and how The Refuge is moving forward.

In Season 2 we have begun an online community to help facilitate some deeper conversations via a Facebook closed group called Faith Circus-ing. This will allow everyone who wants to be part to interact more freely without comments being visible to the entire Facebook world. Click on the link to join.

Looking forward to what’s ahead together!

I am new to The Refuge community and appreciate the foundational humility that I experience there. I am confused, though. From what I hear and understand, Karl has “stepped aside” as pastor due to theological differences concerning gay marriage; specifically performing gay marriage at The Refuge. However, I also hear that Karl is still at the Refuge as pastor. So other than your own ongoing internal processes, what changed? (“Our roles have changed”).

    Stepped aside? Still there?

My personal reasons for asking is that I have invited friends to a church which seemed to be a certain way and as lesbians, they felt shocked and excluded to find that they needed to be fixed somehow; but that Jesus loved them while they engaged in the fixing process. I would like to bring them to The Refuge but I am skittish until I come to understand what the vision/mission is regarding gay marriage, who believes what and who is the pastor.

I am not being intolerant of the intolerant- I am seeking clarity prior to extending a welcome to friends so that their expectations can be accurate and relaxed.

    Thank you!

    • hope, i am so glad that you are here! and asking such good questions 🙂 i will do my best to share where things are at and you may want to read this announcement that was shared with our community and on Facebook in june: the faith circus special edition episode also fleshes some of this out a little more.

hopefully this might help a bit in understanding more on roles. we have never had “the pastor” at the refuge but have always had a co-pastoring structure. karl has stepped out of his co-pastor and decision making role when the decision was made to open up the refuge space for same-sex weddings but he remains a part of the community. as the link shares, a good way to view it now is a pastor-at-large hubbed out of the refuge. mike and i, the other 2 in the co-pastor team, are part of the transition/dream-for-the-next-10-years team which is made up of 14 men and women across all of the areas of our invitation to community. we are slowly working on hopes and dreams for the next 10 years (which you will have an opportunity to contribute to!) and cultivating what a new structure and decision making body might be for the refuge for the next chapter of our story.

we have a specific document that was shared with community members that shared our process and decisions related to gay marriage and i’m glad to get that to you if you are interested! you can message me. thanks, hope.

Thank you. That takes grit and grace- on everyones place. I am so humbled.

  3. I’m so glad you “keep talking”. It’s great to hear people speak truth about church and faith and waiting and being brave. I applaud you both, it’s so great to hear you!
